The limits of credulity: shaking hands with a serial killer

Monday, June 8, 2015, from 14 to 18, David Winter will lead the workshop The limits of credulity: shaking hands with a serial killer.
This seminar will explore the limits of the credulous attitude advocated by George Kelly by considering whether this approach can be applied to serial killers and others who have committed acts of extreme violence, including mass murderers and perpetrators of genocide. An attempt will be made to show sociality by glimpsing the world through the eyes of such individuals, and drawing upon Kelly’s diagnostic constructs to provide an understanding of their construing and their actions. Illustrations will be provided from the narratives of people who have committed homicide, from research conducted in Sierra Leone following its brutal civil war, from current research on radicalisation, and from clinical practice. There will be discussion of the construct of good versus evil, including consideration of the boundary, if any, between illegal and legitimated killing; as well as of criticisms that constructivism adopts a position of moral relativism.

David Winter, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, U.K. Autorevole voce della Psicologia dei Costrutti Personali, si è interessato prevalentemente delle sue applicazioni ed elaborazioni nella clinica e nella psicoterapia.
