Evaluation of group psycotherapy in a public mental health center

Dr Cristian Soldera will lead the free talk Evaluation of group psycotherapy in a public mental health center.

We started by the needs of the Public Mental Health Center to assure a good quality of the service, lowering the costs. We looked for instruments that could read psycotherapy, giving feedbacks to the clinicians but also giving back to the patient his own capability/right of judgement. We didn't want to consider nosologics parameters but we focused on patient's experience, following what Kelly called “transitive diagnosis”(Kelly '55).

The valuation plan, composed by Self-characterization, Video self-confrontation with background insertion and Repertory Grids, has supplied useful cues for the process of evaluation and proved to be an effective (efficacious) indicator of in-outcome. The application of those instruments concentrates on the following targets:

  1. to pursue the meeting with the patient judgement
  2. to monitor objectives
  3. to speed up the patients changements.

We applied this plan to a brief outpatient group for “neurotic disorders” lasting nine months, this kind of valuation became part of the treatment, it followed the patients through this experience without fixing them into parameters or paradigms, it stimulated the explorative research that the patients made on themselves giving back the sense of their own experience in psycotherapy and increase the process that create the “group mentality”. (Palena et al. '09). A single case illustrate this process.
